Tributes have been paid to Mid Suffolk district councillor, Cllr Rachel Eburne, who died on Friday after a long illness.

Rachel had been deputy leader of Mid Suffolk District Council since May 2023, only stepping down from that position last week.

She was also the portfolio holder for finance and resources over the same period.

First elected in 2010, Rachel served the ward of Haughley and Wetherden.

Rachel was diagnosed with multiple myeloma (bone marrow cancer) in November 2018, but chose to continue as a councillor.

Mid Suffolk council leader, Cllr Andy Mellen, said:

“Rachel remained active representing her community, as well as inspiring the new generation of councillors - despite increasing pain and debilitating treatment.

“She served her ward with passion, dedication and distinction. Her kind and compassionate approach won her friends and respect not just across the council chamber, but among our many partner organisations in Suffolk.

“Rachel contributed so much to her community, and she will be a huge loss. All our thoughts are very much with her family.”

In her time as a councillor, Rachel held positions on Mid Suffolk Scrutiny Committee, Joint Scrutiny Committee, Joint Appointments Committee, Mid Suffolk Development Control Committee A, and Mid Suffolk Planning Referrals Committee.

She was also appointed to the Local Government Association board for environment and transport, advising on policy and representing councillors to Government.
