Treating tenants with respect and combatting social housing stigma

19/11/24
Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils are amongst the first in the country to sign up to a new campaign to stop social housing stigma.

An introductory workshop held earlier this month saw tenants, councillors, and council officers come together to explore how to tackle the unfair stereotyping of council tenants and the stigma associated with living in social housing.

As part of the councils’ commitment to the Stop Social Housing Stigma campaign, the councils will now develop a range of commitments as part of a ‘tackling stigma journey planner’, developed by the campaign together with the University of Durham, Sheffield Hallam University, the Chartered Institute of Housing, TPAS and YD Consultants.

Cllr Jessie Carter, Babergh District Council cabinet member for housing, said: “As a council tenant myself, I am pleased we have the opportunity to play a part in addressing this issue and tackling negative stereotypes that are sometimes applied to social housing tenants that are both unfair and undeserved.  We want to be clear that there is no place for those institutional societal stereotypes in Babergh.”

Cllr Richard Winch, Mid Suffolk District Council cabinet member for housing and property, said: “As part of our ongoing commitment to our tenants and transformation of our housing service, we want to ensure that tenants are fully involved in the future design of our services and that we can enjoy a culture of trust, respect and partnership working as tenants and landlord.”

Next steps now include the development of an action plan to feed into the teams’ day-to-day services.
