Statement from Cllr Andrew Stringer, Mid Suffolk’s portfolio holder for Heritage, Planning and Infrastructure, following today's announcement about the National Planning Policy Framework:

“We all want the same thing – good quality, affordable homes in vibrant communities. But the government’s suggestion that councils are the problem is simply wrong.

“More than 1,000 new homes were delivered in our district in the last financial year, 291 of those affordable. Our Joint Local Plan, adopted in 2023, sets out the need for 535 homes a year.

“We will obviously need to take the time to consider the details of today’s announcement and what it means in reality for our communities.

“However, we strongly urge the government to take a collaborative approach - it must work with the housebuilding industry, social housing companies, councils and communities to address the challenges that are faced.

“Any move away from decisions being made at local level would be a move in the wrong direction.”
