Councils’ ‘excellent’ commitment to gender equality recognised
The accreditation certifies high standards and proven practices that embrace menopause in the workplace. It is assessed and awarded by an independent panel who described the councils’ application as "excellent", demonstrating evidence of effectiveness in the five key areas of culture, policies and practices, training, engagement, and working environment.
Across industry, around 18% of an average workforce is menopausal, but with women making up 60% of the workforce at the councils, this figure is likely to be even higher.
Symptoms usually start at around the age of 40 – often at the peak of a professional career – yet nationally, 25% consider quitting their jobs as a result, 14% go part time, and 10% leave work completely.
Thanks to better awareness, training for managers, and a network of menopause champions, the councils now have a range of support in place designed to retain and attract experienced talent, lower absence levels and ensure continuation of the best possible service and value for residents.
