Thornham Walks pioneering path ‘tyres’ out young visitors
Thought to be the first of its kind in Suffolk, the environmentally-friendly pathway is made from more than 5,000 recycled tyres.
It was made possible by funding from Mid Suffolk District Council through their Community Infrastructure Levy and Community Development Fund grants.
The 0.75 mile footpath has been covered in an innovative surface called Flexipave.
It is made up of 50% recycled tyres and 50% aggregate, bound together with an environmentally friendly binder.
The previous broken and cracked tarmac surface was used as the groundworks for the new footpath, continuing the up-cycling initiative.
Flexipave is a porous surface that cleans the water passing through, removing significant amounts (up to 90%) of soluble phosphates and nitrates.
It also recharges surface water to the soil surface at its edges, making the walking area more resilient to increased rainfall.
“This pioneering new footpath surface benefits visitors of all abilities and backgrounds, young and old alike.
"Its many qualities ensure a low maintenance surface which blends harmoniously with its surroundings.
"The project has been demanding work for staff and volunteers alike, but the reward is well worth it, securing our greatest asset for many years to come.”
“It is great to see the pioneering path project at Thornham Walks come to fruition.
"Providing three quarters of a mile of durable, looped footpath means this attractive woodland habitat is fully accessible for visitors to enjoy safely in all seasons for years to come.
"I am delighted that Mid Suffolk District Council was able to provide financial support to the project. But, I also want to thank Friends of Thornham Walks and many additional volunteers who cleaned, cleared, dug - and provided catering and refreshments - to make this new asset possible.
"As a council, we support projects like this through funding available via our Community Infrastructure Levy and community development grants. Working in collaboration with local groups in this way we can really make a difference to our communities.”
